One of the things I enjoy the most about writing fantasy is creating an origin story for my tales. I make lists and tables and draw maps and sometime I invent history books.
In an age long forgotten, the Goddess Ilinia formed the island in her image. She created all the flora- crops for food, trees for shelter, flowers for joy and beauty. Then in the time of awakening, she created the island bound. Races of humans, trolls, knockers, dwarves, dryads and many others all bound to the island's magic.
She loved her creation and placed her beating heart at the core of the Iron mountain to sustain all magic.
Exhausted the goddess slept.
While the goddess slumbered, a sapphire mist blew in from the western seas and settled over the island. From this mist emerged the Fae both beautiful and frightening. The island bound were in awe of the Fae and greeted them warmly. It wasn't until the Fae king had taken control of the island and all its magic that the island bound realized their mistake.
Algorh, the leader of the island people, climbed to Ilinia's Highest peak and begged the goddess to intervene. when Ilinia answered the mountains shook and boulders tumbled, but Algorh stood firm.
"I will not rescue you from the Fae," the goddess said. "I will give to you this gift so that you no longer need fear the fae."
The goddess handed Algorh a lump of iron.
"No fae can abide the touch of iron. Go now and free my island bound."
